A critique of bureaucratic statism, political dependency and the urgent need to recover merit, technology and citizen sovereignty.
THE SWAMP OF GOOD INTENTIONS
The socialist hypocrisy: equally enslaved by “social justice”
By Dr. Nelson Jorge Mosco Castellano
In an age in which language is used not to illuminate truth, but to dissolve it, few phrases are as suspicious as “social justice”.
In the stagnant democracies of the periphery, this expression has gone from being a humanitarian ideal to becoming a technical euphemism for the maintenance of a bureaucratic oligarchy.
Uruguay, that small piece of land that was once the civilized laboratory of the Southern Cone, now faces a silent tragedy: that of a people who confuse stability with immobility.
It is the triumph of Left-Wing Conservatism, a political pathology in which the methods of 1945 are defended with the ferocity of a religious dogma, while the outside world transforms itself into a machinery of algorithms and capital flows that do not understand nostalgia.
The Ministry of the Status Quo
Governing this country well is a physical possibility, but a moral impossibility under the current regime of thought.
The obstacle is not the lack of resources, but the existence of a caste that lives —and lives very well— from the effort of others.
For these administrators of inertia, efficiency is a sin and transparency is an act of aggression.
They prefer an elephantine and blind State, because it is in the shadows of bureaucracy that privilege, prebend, nepotism, cronyism and State corruption are best hidden.
The average citizen has been conditioned to believe that any attempt to modernize public administration is an attack on his own security.
He has been taught to fear freedom.
He is told that “State protection” is a right, without mentioning that the cost of that protection is the suffocation of his own initiative.
It is the peace of the institutional, social and economic cemetery; the burial of a future of peaceful coexistence.
The Revolution of Unalterable Data
However, there is a way out, and it is a way out that the guardians of the status quo fear more than the ballot box: mathematical truth.
The implementation of unalterable digital records and real-time audits —the application of blockchain— is not a matter of engineering, but of ethics.
If the citizen could see, with crystal clarity, how his taxes are diluted in the labyrinth of State entities; if he could bypass the bureaucrat through sovereign digital identity, power would return to his hands.
Technology, for the first time, offers the possibility of a decentralization that the politician cannot corrupt.
The antidote against the Administrative Big Brother.
The Return to Letters and Merit
But technology by itself is a corpse.
The transition toward a prosperous Uruguay demands a return to the Liberal Arts.
Without critical thinking, modern man is only an appendix of his mobile device.
The educational system must stop being a factory of public employees and union activists, and once again become the gymnasium of individual judgment.
We must rescue the idea that true solidarity does not consist in perpetuating dependency, but in fostering autonomy.
Genuine social justice is not the kind that distributes crumbs from the State budget, but the kind that guarantees that every man and woman has enough personal agency not to have to ask permission to prosper.
The Duty of the Bridge Generation
Those who have lived long enough to remember an ethic of work based on individual responsibility have a sacred duty.
They cannot allow the narrative of subsidy to be the only inheritance of their grandchildren.
The political class that has turned the Republic into its fiefdom will not yield.
Corporate structures will not dissolve voluntarily.
Change will come from a coalition of those who still believe that truth exists beyond partisan slogans.
Governing Uruguay well does not require a new caudillo; it requires the courage to turn on the light in the closed rooms of the State and the decency to call things by their name.
In the end, if one maintains intellectual honesty and the fiscal discipline of respecting what belongs to others, the modesty of administering with an eye on a future that is empathetic and voluntarily solidary, one ceases to be a threat and once again becomes a private property of the citizens.
It broadens the beneficiaries of change and integrates creatively into the inevitability of this revolutionary change of era.
To go deeper into who the true heirs of this transformation are and why the change of era is not a political option, but a force of human nature, we must lift our gaze above the immediate conjuncture.
The transition we are discussing is not a simple administrative adjustment; it is the displacement of a tectonic plate that can no longer be stopped by a political conclave.
The silent beneficiaries of unstoppable change will generate the passage from the client of welfare dependency to the truly sovereign citizen.
Beyond macroeconomic figures, the great winners of a modern and technological institutional order are those who today are “off the radar” or trapped in dependency:
The productive middle class: the small merchant, the independent professional, the service technician and the rural producer.
Today they are the “ham in the sandwich”, suffocated by taxes to sustain an apparatus that does not return quality services to them.
The change of era produced by human genius gives them back economic oxygen and predictability.
The uprooted youth, those young people who today look to the airport as the only way out, will become part of an “Estonia on the River Plate” that offers them an ecosystem where their digital talent is valued here, allowing them to compete globally without abandoning their roots, their home, their compatriots.
The “grandchildren of freedom” are the future generations who will receive a minimal, effective and efficient State, with sound accounts and a culture of responsibility, instead of an unpayable debt and a mentality of defeat in every political decision.
State inertia.
Transparency and technology.
Merit and sovereignty.
